If your job has more than 50 employees at a single location for at least 23 weeks of the year, then you are entitled to FMLA (Family/Medical Leave Act). This allows for up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, with the stipulation that you will be returning to work after the leave is completed. Now, if you want to get paid for your leave, you can get up to 6 weeks paid for by Paid Family Leave, which is a program through State Disability. You pay SDI out of your paycheck every pay period, and this is what its for. It replaces up to 55% of your gross pay for each week you are disabled, up to six weeks in a 12 month period. Go to www.edd.ca.gov and search for Paid Family Leave applications. You can request one be sent to you. Congratulations and good luck.
